Abstract. The article examines two poems: "What for?" by the major representative of "senior symbolists" K. D. Balmont and "Why?" by the Ossetian symbolist poet of the beginning of the XX century A. I. Tokaev. The central theme of both poems is a prayer, an appeal to God. Tokaev’s poetical work is written under the immediate influence of Balmont’s poem but the theme is interpreted differently by the poets. The analysis identified the peculiarities of the lyrical heroes’ images (Balmont’s disillusioned decadent and Tokaev’s sufferer with a heart-angel) and the specificity of representing the prayer theme from the viewpoint of modern spirit: the turn of the XIX-XX centuries with Balmont and revolutionary years of the beginning of the XX century with Tokaev. For the first time in Russian and Ossetian literary criticism the author refers to the comparative analysis of the chosen poems.
