PECULIARITIES OF TRANSFERRING THE CHILEAN TOPONYMS BY MEANS OF THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract. The article examines the ways to transfer the nominations of the Chilean toponymicon by means of the Russian language. The research material includes the sources, which differ in genre and subject matter. Special attention is paid to the problems of choosing the strategy to translate geographical names; the absence of a standardized approach is emphasized. Analysing the factual material the author concludes that the method of practical transcription prevails, and there are precedents of the word-for-word translation of a toponym or its denotation and of the simple transfer of the Spanish name into the Russian language.
Key words and phrases: транслитерация, топоним, Чили, практическая транскрипция, денотат, перевод, transliteration, toponym, Chili, practical transcription, denotation, translation
