Abstract. The article is devoted to analysing the artistic originality of the story "The Portable Virgin" by the modern Irish English-speaking authoress Anne Enright. The paper focuses on studying the mythologeme and mythonym of "Holy Mary", which are realized implycitly and explicitly in the story. The author identifies the means to represent Mary-wife’s and Mary-mistress’s image and discovers the ways to actualize the mythologeme and mythonym of "Holy Mary". The writer’s specific techniques contribute to the deconstruction of the Saintess’s traditional image and the formation of another, cardinally new, image in the Irish national worldview.
