"MOMENTS OF EVERLASTINGNESS": CONTINUITY OF THE NATURE TOPIC INTERPRETATION IN THE WORKS BY RICHARD JEFFERIES AND EDWARD THOMAS

Abstract. In the article, the influence of the writer of the XIX century Richard Jefferies on the works by the British literary critic and author of non-fiction prose Edward Thomas, who became a poet during the First World War, is analysed. The author considers common to the both writers views on nature and a human’s place in it, which can be called "mystical agnosticism": despite the disbelief of both the men in the supernatural, nature was a source of spiritual revelations for them; both the writers saw the reflection of the whole long history of the interaction of a human being and nature in the rural landscape. It is shown how the continuity of the views of these two authors is expressed in their works.
