OFFICE CHRONOTOPE IN M. ZOSHCHENKO’S STORIES OF THE 1920-30S

Abstract. The office chronotope in M. Zoshchenko’s works is examined by the material of the stories of the 1920-1930s. As the writer shows, in the office, time hangs heavy when you are waiting for an official or for a decision on a certain issue. Narrative situations associated with the office chronotope are based on alogism or absurdity. A piece of paper containing a text or a special "scratch" acquires almost magic force here. Such attributes of the office chronotope as a chair (armchair), a table, a wastepaper basket, a typewriter, a sofa for visitors are identified. Office time is characterized by absurd periodicity of events, which can induce a hero to excite a spontaneous revolt against the officials. However, in most cases, personages associated with this chronotope are "ordinary people", who obey the established rules. Moreover, the office chronotope is considered in the context of "office motives" frequent in the works by M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, I. Ilf and E. Petrov, M. Bulgakov, Jean-Paul Sartre and A. Camus.
