Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the essential stratum of borrowings in the Russian language - the Turkisms. The research material includes educational etymological dictionaries issued at the beginning of the XXI century. Analysing historical and etymological description of the Turkic borrowings represented in these dictionaries, in particular information on chronology of borrowing, the authors conclude that the period of borrowing of a certain word is identified differently. It’s worth mentioning that in most cases, dictionary entries contain no information on alternative viewpoints and no indication that represented chronological information is approximate.
