Abstract. The article analyses the peculiarities of the Latin American popular novel of the XIX century. This genre appeared as a result of national interpretation of the European literary trends of different epochs. A sequential analysis is conducted by the example of the Colombian sentimental novel "Maria" by Jorge Isaacs and the Mexican adventurous political novel "The Bandits from R?o Fr?o" by Manuel Payno y Flores. The researchers identify the storyline motives, literary allusions, clich?s and topoi of the European novel, which acquired an original interpretation in the mentioned works. The findings justify the relevance of the Latin American prose against the background of growing interest for popular literature.
