DEPENDENCE OF THE SEMANTICS OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE MODAL VERBS ON CONTEXTUAL ENVIRONMENT

Abstract. The article discusses the dependence of the semantics of the German language modal verbs on contextual environment. It is shown that modal verbs are more often used in the primary (deontic or volitional) meaning. A secondary meaning occurs when modal verbs are combined with non-terminative predicates, or if modal words or particles are used in a sentence. Modal predicates may not have modal meaning. Such cases occur when they are compatible with verbs denoting natural phenomena and emotional state. The non-modal meanings of modal verbs are in the realm of the aspectual and temporal semantic zone.
Key words and phrases: модальные глаголы, аспектуальность, темпоральность, эпистемическая семантика, деонтическое значение, волюнтативность, фазовость, modal verbs, aspectuality, temporality, epistemic semantics, deontic meaning, volition, phaseness
