Abstract. The article focuses on the German polysemantic composites, i.e. words with compound bases. The author analyses derivative bases of these units and examines the basic ways to form their semantic structure. According to the researcher, among the types of polysemy the most frequent is the radial one, then follows chain polysemy and the mixed type of polysemy. Among the derivative bases the dominance belongs to noun and adverb bases. It’s also worth mentioning that polysemantic composites have a wide range of stylistic labels. The label "colloquial" is the most frequent one. Finally, the author concludes that the fewer components a compound word includes, i.e. the simpler its word-formative structure is, the richer and more diverse its semantic structure is.
