Abstract. The article examines the history of acquaintance of the Japanese with the Russian literary-critical thought and V. G. Belinsky’s works at the end of the XIX century. The author demonstrates the role of the famous specialist in the Russian philology Futabatei Shimei in the propaganda of V. G. Belinsky’s critical ideas, in the formation of the Japanese society’s strong interest in the Russian critical thought, which later greatly influenced the process of the new Japanese literature formation and development.
