REPRESENTATION OF IMMIGRANTS IN THE BRITISH PRESS ON THE EVE OF THE 2005 UK PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

Abstract. Using the critical discourse analysis method, the article examines discursive means to express negative attitude towards immigrants on the eve of the 2005 UK parliamentary elections. The publications of the leading British newspapers "The Daily Mail" and "The Guardian" served as the research material. The findings lead to the conclusion that the ruling authorities, using the mass media, form the desired public opinion in relation to "others", develop and maintain the negative images of "outsiders" as representatives of other races, ethnic groups and cultures.
