Submitted: 03.07.2019
Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the Coptic "Martyrdom of ss. Paese and Thecla". This monument was published in the second half of the XX century and has not been previously investigated from the literary viewpoint, because the Coptic hagiography as an autonomous phenomenon has only recently aroused the interest of researchers. "Martyrdom of ss. Paese and Thecla" is distinguished by novel features. The narration is characterized by dynamism and a large number of personages. Some stories refer to the martyrdom genre, others are not. The analysis is focused just on the latter ones. The researcher identifies novel features and images, establishes their biblical prototypes. The conclusion is made about the hagiographer’s approach when writing the martyrdom.
