Abstract. The article attempts to study the interpretation of literature essence on the basis of the conceptions of structuralism and poststructuralism. The focus is on literature as a result of creativity with special requirements. Basing on the analysis of the attitude of the two schools (structuralism and poststructuralism) to the text, sign, meaning, it is shown that structuralists and poststructuralists promoted the emergence of new views on the essence of literature in terms of understanding the sign and symbol as the basis of language, writing and literature.
