Abstract. The study aims to identify differences in representation of modality in the Russian-language and English-language religious discourses. The article provides a rationale for modality being a characteristic of religious discourse, carries out a contrastive analysis of text fragments belonging to the Russian-language and English-language discourses, identifies cases in which deontic and alethic modality is actualised, differentiates between linguistic means used for its representation in the considered languages. Scientific novelty of the work lies in identifying differences between linguistic means for modality representation. As a result, it was proved that there are no substantial differences observed between means for actualising modality of incentive, admonition, advice and threat; differences are found between means for actualising modality of assessment, wish, admonition and prohibition.
Key words and phrases: религиозный дискурс, сопоставление, модальность, субъективная модальность, объективная модальность, аксиологичность, religious discourse, contrast, modality, subjective modality, objective modality, axiological nature
