Visions of Apocalypse: Urban Poetry of the Turn of the ХIХ-ХХ Centuries (E. Verhaeren, V. Y. Bryusov, A. I. Tokaev)

Abstract. The paper shows how the theme of apocalypse as anticipation of revolution is represented in urban poetry of the turn of the ХIХ-ХХ centuries (E. Verhaeren, V. Y. Bryusov, A. I. Tokaev). Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the problem of representation of relevant artistic ideas of the turn of the ХIХ-ХХ centuries in the European, Russian and Ossetian literature has not been previously investigated in literary criticism. The research findings are as follows: the author reveals peculiarities of the apocalypse theme interpretation in urban context: chaos of revolt as a driver of history (Verhaeren), grotesque manifestation of a biblical image in everyday reality as personification of upcoming horror (Bryusov), representation of the tragic present and the gloomy future through religious and colour symbols (Tokaev).
