Abstract. The article for the first time examines specificity of graphic design of A. P. Chekhov’s book "Sakhalin Island". The research objective involves identifying the graphic means used in the book and analyzing their functions. Scientific originality of the paper lies in the fact that the book’s graphic design has not been previously investigated. The conducted analysis allows identifying the following graphic means: italics, spacing, "feathering" and text graphic equivalent. Their functions are described taking into account a compositional peculiarity - the book is divided into basic text and "subtext" (notes, references). Special attention is paid to distribution of graphic means in the text. The following conclusions are justified: graphic means perform diversified functions that differ depending on a particular text layer, the book’s graphic design is closely associated with the writer’s storyline and compositional intention.
