Abstract. The article discusses prospects of applying the cluster analysis to study affixal word formation in the modern English language. The paper aims to reveal principles of compatibility of prefixes and suffixes. Affixes are clustered according to five criteria. The pairs of closest clusters are identified. The practical part of the study is based on analysing derivative units, which include at least one affix with the meaning of quality. The research material was obtained from professional texts of the railway subject area.
