Abstract. The paper aims to identify origins and manifestations of theatricality of self-revelation in short stories by the German writer-romanticist F. de la Motte Fouqu?. The article examines culturally determined causes of revival of the chivalrous ideal as a basis of theatricality, reveals theatralization techniques used in the stories. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that formal theatralization techniques and tendencies for theatralization in romantic prose are analysed by the example of F. de la Motte Fouqu?’s short stories. The following conclusions are justified: in the writer’s creative work, theatricality of self-revelation manifested itself through adherence to chivalrous ideals; tendency for theatralization presupposes imperative influence on the reader; the writer elevates the story to the level of religious and moral admonition, introduces elements of scenic narration.
