Issue of Moral Choice in V. V. Orlov’s Novel "The Apothecary"

Abstract. The article considers specificity of a moral choice faced by the characters from V. V. Orlov’s fantasy novel "The Apothecary", when they accidently free a Bereginya who grants wishes. The study aims to determine the ethical stance that the characters take in the situation of absolute permissiveness. The research is novel in that the moral issues upon which this work of fiction touches have previously received attention solely from the authors writing critical articles. As a result, it is found that the characters are not ready to do right with the Bereginya’s gift due to their lack of high spiritual aspirations, so consequences of this situation become tragic. But the novel’s protagonist evolves as a person: making his moral choice, the character renounces his stance of a passive observer and sacrifices his love to save Ostankino residents.
