Abstract. The aim of the research is to reveal the peculiarities of pseudonyms of the English-speaking authors of the 18th-21st centuries based on nicknames. The article compares the notions of "nickname" and "pseudonym" in the context of domestic and foreign linguistics, and also provides the examples of using nicknames as pseudonyms. The scientific originality of the research lies in the comprehensive analysis of the inventoried, but little-studied empirical material in accordance with the classification of nicknames by D. I. Ermolovich. As a result, the similarities and differences of nicknames and pseudonyms are indicated, the choice of the above classification is justified, and it is proved that the basis of the English-speaking authors’ pseudonyms can be both anthroponymic and "improper" nicknames, and nicknames of a mixed type.
Key words and phrases: псевдоним, прозвище, апеллятив, оним, ономастика, pseudonym, nickname, appellative, onym, onomastics
