Abstract. The aim of this study is to verify the hypothesis that the most of blood relation terms of the Russian and English languages have an identical common Indo-European origin. The scientific originality lies in the identification of the semantic, structural, phonetic and functional features of the etymology of blood relation terms in non-closely related languages (Russian and English), which has not previously become the subject of study in linguistics. When conducting a thorough comparative analysis, we relied on a wide range of lexicographic sources of both Russian and English. As a result of the study, for the first time, the percentage of terms with the same etymology was established.
