Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the main Indo-Iranian mythological motifs in J. R. R. Tolkien’s creative work. Scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time in the Russian literary criticism, an attempt is made to examine and describe various Indo-Iranian motifs in the writer’s works and determine the probability of them having been borrowed. In addition, the study is novel in that the author’s creative work is considered in the context of not only European but also Eastern mythology. The research findings reveal a high degree of J. R. R. Tolkien’s artistic skill, who elaborately incorporates various mythological motifs into his creative work and ultimately develops a comprehensive mythological system of a new level.
