Place of Phraseological Combinations in the System of Language Units

Abstract. The study aims to determine the place of phraseological combinations in the system of language units by comparing them to free word combinations and phraseological units-idioms. Scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that the important criterion underlying the comparison is determinacy of phraseological combinations components, which reveals a different degree of coherence between components depending on the grammatical structure of phraseological combinations. Basing on systematisation of the information about lexical-semantic and morphological-syntactic determinacy of phraseological combinations, the researcher has revealed their similarity to and differences with phraseological units-idioms and free word combinations. As a result, the status of phraseological combinations in the system of language units is identified. Phraseological combinations are considered as a transitional stage from free word combinations to phraseology.
