Initial Abbreviation in the English Bridge Building Terminology

Abstract. The paper aims to reveal specificity of initial abbreviations in the English bridge building terminology. Scientific originality of the study is conditioned by the fact that abbreviation as a means of term formation in the English language is for the first time investigated by the example of the subject area "Bridge Building". The conclusion is made that initial abbreviation is a highly productive way of term formation in the modern English bridge building terminology. The conducted research allows identifying phenomena of polysemy, homonymy, synonymy and antonymy typical of scientific and technical terminology.
