Submitted: 12.01.2021
Abstract. The article aims to identify the basic mechanisms to form an actual meaning of the English phraseological units with the component of a verb of motion in water, representing images of two opposing/interacting elements. Scientific originality of the paper involves developing a special algorithm to study semantics of the phraseological units representing dynamic processes. Scientific novelty is also determined by the fact that the "force dynamics" category is for the first time applied to analyse phraseological units. The research findings are as follows: the author describes the basic cognitive mechanisms participating in formation of phraseological units’ actual meaning, concludes on reasonability of using the "force dynamics" category to analyse phraseological material.
Key words and phrases: фразеологическая единица, метафора, метафтонимия, конвенциональные знания, фрейм, динамика силы, phraseological unit, metaphor, metaphtonymy, conventional knowledge, frame, force dynamics
