Abstract. The purpose of the study is to shed light on the image of the Wolverine in the folklore of the Forest Yukaghir. The work is novel in that it is the first to characterise the image of the Wolverine using the material of the Forest Yukaghir oral tradition, to trace semantic relationship between stories about the Wolverine. As a result, it is shown that there are two common types of story in the fairy lore of the Forest Yukaghir: 1) the Bear and the Wolverine; 2) the Lynx and the Wolverine. Interaction of these characters is attributable to watching the wolverine in nature, identifying features of its appearance and social behaviour. In fairy tales, the image of the Wolverine is that of a cunning, greedy, insidious, unpleasant animal. In song folklore, the Wolverine has a positive connotation and is associated with a lucky hunter, which is linked to ritual orientation of children’s songs.
