Abstract. The purpose of the study is to identify features of the author’s realisation of the linguocultural character type "English detective" in K. Ishiguro’s novel. Scientific novelty of the study lies in choosing the novel "When We Were Orphans" by K. Ishiguro as the research material, which has not been a subject of linguocultural analysis yet. The results of the study reveal that the principal character of this work of fiction represents the linguocultural character type "English detective", which shares such common characteristics as professional activity, restraint, politeness, focus on fighting evil. However, in K. Ishiguro’s interpretation, there is a transformation of the image of this linguocultural character type, which is manifested in the character’s appearance, behaviour and attitude to his values.
