Abstract. The paper aims to reveal the systemic-categorial status and functional peculiarities of adjectives with the suffixes -ейш-/-айш- possessing the word-formative meaning "intensity of a feature manifestation". Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the author for the first time analyses adjectives with the suffixes -ейш-/-айш- as a means of the intensity category realization and shows how their semantics ("intensity of a feature manifestation") correlates with the types of their motivating bases. The findings indicate that in the modern Russian language, the adjectives under study express a degree of a feature manifestation and possess an extensive motivating base.
Key words and phrases: словообразовательная категория, превосходная степень сравнения, словообразующий суффикс, word-formative category, superlative degree of comparison, word-formative suffix
