Abstract. The research aims to determine the essential features peculiar to H. de Balzac’s romantic creative method, which manifest themselves in the use of the technique of contrastive oppositions. This technique is studied through evolution of the image of the main character, Rapha?l de Valentin, contrast of the female images, Pauline and Foedora, as well as through the image of the Antiquarian, who acts as a voice of the writer’s philosophical ideas. The article analyses realistic interpretations of the novel’s fantastical side. Scientific novelty of the research lies in highlighting the technique of contrastive oppositions as a characteristic feature of the romantic creative method in Balzac’s novel and studying their reflection in the language of the work. As a result, it is proved that the romantic creative method is predominant in the novel "The Wild Ass’s Skin".
