Spatial Nominations in Athanasius the Great’s Hagiography

Abstract. The paper aims to reveal specificity of the space category realization in Athanasius the Great’s hagiography. The article analyses nominal lexical units (spatial nominations) representing space image in the hagiographic text. It is shown that urban space plays the key role in textual space organization. It is noted that the sainthood conception determines axiological interpretation of space in the hagiographic text. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the space category in the hagiographic text is examined through the lens of spatial nomination semantics. The findings indicate that in Athanasius the Great’s hagiography, nominal lexemes with spatial meaning represent geographic space, serve as locus identifiers and acquire religious and ethical connotations typical of the hagiographic genre.
