Verbal Act of Politeness: The Correlation with Speech Etiquette (on the Basis of the English Language)

Submitted: 16.06.2021
Abstract. The purpose of the study is to clarify interrelatedness and interdependence of units and thematic groups of speech etiquette with the notion "linguistic politeness". Scientific novelty of the study lies in shifting focus from the sociolinguistic component of speech etiquette and the culturological component of the notion "politeness" in general to correlative features of these two entities. P. Brown and S. Levinson’s classical theory of politeness is subjected to a critical analysis. Basing on the results of the analysis, the author gives her own definition of the notion of politeness, introduces a new definition of language/speech politeness that is verbal and communicative politeness. A contrastive comparison of the names of thematic groups of speech etiquette and verbalised acts of politeness is carried out; their correlation in speech creative activity is also examined. All the theoretical considerations are supported by analysing practical material in Russian and English. As a result, it is proved that verbal and communicative politeness correlates with units and thematic groups of speech etiquette in terms of interrelatedness and interdependence, but not all the components of speech etiquette fall under the notion of politeness.
