Colour Naming Units in Chinese Poetic Texts of the Tang Era

Abstract. The study aims to identify the role of colour terms in the Chinese poetry of the Tang era (VII-X centuries). The paper is novel in that it is the first to analyse the main colour naming units in Chinese poetic texts of the Tang era, to determine that poets of this period use colour terms not only to convey meanings that are traditional for Chinese culture, but also to express the author’s individuality and their own worldview. As a result, it has been proved that colour naming units can convey a wide range of meanings, which are often completely opposite, in the Chinese poetry of the Tang era. The most common colour terms in the poetry of this period are white and blue-green, indicating the significance of the themes of spiritual insight and renewal of life for poets.
