Translation of English-Language Phytonyms in Fiction

Abstract. The study aims to describe the functioning of phytonyms as a component of the author’s style of William Morris and to identify the peculiarities of phytonyms translation. The researcher carries out analysis using the material of six later novels by William Morris, the creator of the fantasy novel genre. Scientific novelty of the study lies in involving new material, which makes it possible, firstly, to verify the conclusions we made earlier using other material and, secondly, to expand the range of the phenomenon under consideration. In addition to the purely semantic aspect, the study is also carried out in the stylistic aspect, since a relatively large part of the analysed translation difficulties are associated with the peculiarities of translating the poetic diction of the novel. As a result of the work, a dictionary of phytonyms used by the analysed author has been compiled, possible ways of translating phytonyms into Russian have been described.
