Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the cultural subtext in N. N. Tolstaya’s short stories “To Be like Everyone Else” and “The View from the Window” through semantic variants of the notional concept LIFE. Scientific novelty of the paper lies in considering the notional concept within the framework of intertexts as a representative of the national cognitive space in a specific time period. As a result of the study, it was possible to determine that a notional concept, when it is within “intertext blocks”, is able to manifest the peculiarities of the linguistic consciousness of a nation that are characteristic of a certain time period and demonstrate the extralinguistic reality of any given historical stage. In particular, N. N. Tolstaya’s texts revealed semantic variants reflecting the cultural situation in the Soviet Union during the post-war years and in the 60s, as well as the peculiarities of the worldview and ideology of those periods.
