Existential Issues in E. M. Remarque’s Anti-War Works

Abstract. The paper aims to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the genesis and evolution of the existential idea in E. M. Remarque’s anti-war works. The study is novel in that it is the first to analyse the writer’s worldview through the lens of existentialist philosophy. As a result, the researcher has successfully reached a conclusion about E. M. Remarque’s attitude to the transformation of the fundamental values of human existence during wartime, has traced the evolution of the writer’s ethical position regarding the danger of man’s self-destruction influenced by the lack of faith in humanity in situations of existential crisis, when human virtues became neglected due to the necessity of physical survival.
