National History Coverage in the Context of Modern English-Language Multicultural Prose (by the Material of Jhumpa Lahiri’s Novel "The Lowland")

Abstract. The paper considers Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel "The Lowland". By addressing this material, the research aims to examine how the writer, relying on the genre strategies of a family chronicle, provides insight into the issue of the interaction between the history of the country and the history of several generations of one family. While the multicultural prose of the second half of the XX century has already been extensively addressed by foreign and Russian scholars, works on the stated issues published in the early XXI century are insufficiently studied. Moreover, the analysis of the novel "The Lowland" in the context of the specified topic is carried out for the first time in Russian literary studies, which accounts for scientific originality of the research. As a result, the researcher has substantiated the significance of the influence that national history has on the formation of characters’ identity.
