WOOD CARVING OF SCANDINAVIA AND PRE-MONGOL NOVGOROD

Abstract. The author describes the evolution of the Scandinavian wood carving style within the period between the Xth-XIth centuries (such styles as Mammen, Ringerike, Urnes) and its analogs in the art of Northern Europe and Novgorod the Great, and pays particular attention to the interpretation of the architectural details (columns of Oak Sophia), found in Novgorod, in their possible interconnection with the wood carving of the early Scandinavian churches.
