KHASHUPSA FORTRESS IN THE CONTEXT OF STUDY OF EARLY MEDIEVAL ANTIQUITIES OF ABKHAZIA: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS

Abstract. The author reveals the archaeological study prospectivity of such unexplored regions of Abkhazia as the river Khashupsa basin, pays special attention to Khashupsa fortress and surrounding burial grounds of early Middle Ages, which practically have not been explored and introduced into scientific circulation, for the first time accumulates all known for today data on the fortress in the river Khashupsa valley, and considers the scientific significance of the objects in the context of their strategic location and possible connection with the Trans-Caucasian segment of the Great Silk Road.
