Abstract. The author studies one of the factors of regionalism development in Spain, that is the essence of ethnic identity and its reflection in the ideology of regionalist organizations, as well as in the consciousness of population, emphasizes the period of ethnic identity formation - the XIIIth-XIXth centuries, reveals the specificity of population's self-identification in the regions of Spain, and shows the role of identity in the ideology and practice of regionalist and separatist organizations.
