Abstract. The author studies the communicative function of screen image in order to set initial communication limits marked with the point of photographic shifter localization, supposes that, in contrast to the corresponding deictic unit in natural language, photographic shifter has a high degree of uncertainty, does not include perception codes and does not form stable sign structure that allows to call it blank, i.e. not linguistically or plastically mediated, shows that blank shifter localization is the boundary of exposed frame in a photograph or interframe space in a movie, considers blank shifter function as reduced to blank vision intention actualization taken out of the subject, purpose and method of observation, and it allows to include blank shifter into the ontological conditions of screen image.
