GEOPOLITICAL ASPECTS OF THE US-SOVIET CONFRONTATION IN THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST (THE 1970S – THE BEGINNING OF THE 1980S)

Abstract. The article discusses the geopolitical aspect of the process of the US-Soviet struggle for the world leadership in the 1970s – at the beginning of the 1980s by the example of the interests collision of two countries in the Near and Middle East. The so-called "Iranian" and "Afghan" projects, by which implementation the superpowers planned to defend their interests in the Persian Gulf, are considered. The geopolitical interests of other countries in this region are analyzed.
