HISTORY OF MODERN WESTERN BOURGEOIS PHILOSOPHY PENETRATION TO VIETNAM

Le Thi Tuyet
Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia

Abstract. The author analyzes modern western bourgeois philosophy penetration to Vietnam over a period of two stages. The first stage is a period until 1954, when Vietnam was still a French colony. During that period progressive intellectuals familiarized the Vietnamese public with the philosophical thoughts of Descartes, Montesquieu, J.-J. Rousseau, Diderot, Voltaire, etc. in their articles in newspapers, magazines, and books. The second stage is a stage of American aggression in the South of Vietnam, which lasted from 1954 till 1975. At this stage those philosophical doctrines were widespread that brought political benefits to the USA and the pro-US authorities of South Vietnam, such as personalism, existentialism, psychoanalysis, neo-Thomism and pragmatism. Overall, these were the main stages of modern western bourgeois philosophy penetration to Vietnam. After the end of the war and the reunification of the country (1975) the Communist Party of Vietnam identified modern western bourgeois philosophy as hostile to Marxism-Leninism. During the whole era modern western philosophical doctrines were sharply criticized, and their dissemination was forbidden in Vietnam.
