LETTER MOTIVE IN THE DUTCH GENRE PAINTING OF THE XVII TH CENTURY

Abstract. The author analyzes letter motive in the paintings of the Dutch genre art of the XVII th century, tells that the topicality of the theme is conditioned by its insufficient elaboration in historiography, and describes the scientific novelty as the determination of strong interconnections between epistolary culture and fine art of Holland, as well as the detailed compositional analysis of not previously studied works of Gerard ter Borch, Gabriel Metsu, Jan Vermeer and other prominent Dutch genre painters, who turned to plots on the theme of reading, receiving and creating letters; and comes to the conclusion that the didactic emblematics was the source of content aspect in the paintings under consideration.
