Abstract. Russia preparation to the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905 included the measures on public opinion formation, aimed at supporting military operations. The author, basing on the analysis of the archival documents of the end of the XIX th – the beginning of the XX th century, reveals the specificity of the process of Japan image formation as an enemy in the minds of the Russian public, and emphasizes the characteristic of the Japanese national features in their perception by the Russian society.
