Bannikov Andrei Valer'evich
Saint Petersburg State University

Abstract. There are a lot of literary sources devoted to Konstantin’s vision and his conversion to Christian faith. In some researchers’ opinion, initially the symbol adopted by Konstantin had nothing to do with Christ’s name initials and was of pagan origin; probably, it was connected with Apollo’s cult. More probable is the hypothesis, according to which not Christian or solar symbols were depicted on the shields of Konstantin’s warriors, but runes that is explained by the presence of a large number of people from Nordic countries by birth in this emperor’s army.
