SELF-DIRECTION AND SELF-REPRESENTATION IN CULTURE (BY THE EXAMPLE OF THE FIGURE OF NAPOLEON)

Abstract. The author focuses on the reception of the image of Napoleon in the world and, in particular, the German culture. Special attention is paid to the legend created around the personality of this historical figure that was formed both by himself from ideological viewpoint and his contemporaries and later admirers. It is stated that the incompatibility of ideas on surrounding reality picture leads to unsolvable conflict between the hero and society; the romantic hero’s reality is actively recreated in accordance with the ideal that couldn’t but influence the appearance of a new hero of theatrical process, but already not an actor, a director.
