ERNEST GELLNER’S FUNCTIONALIST THEORY OF NATIONALISM

Abstract. The modern world political process despite the growing tendencies of globalization and integration is characterized by the persistence and periodical activization of nationalist movements and ideologies in the world. In social sciences up to the present day a unified theory of the origin and nature of nationalism has not been formulated. The functionalist theory of Ernest Gellner, which considers the phenomenon of nationalism from modernist positions, is one of the leading modern theories of nationalism. In the article the key ideas of the researcher concerning the genesis of nationalism, the impact of industrialization process on the growth of nationalist movements, the typology of nationalism drawn by Gellner as well as the strengths and weaknesses of this theory are analyzed.
