INTERACTION OF JAZZ AND AVANT-GARDE BY EXAMPLE OF GAVRIIL POPOV’S CHAMBER SYMPHONY

Abstract. The article reveals the issues related to the interaction of jazz and avant-garde by the example of one work by Gavriil Nikolaevich Popov, who is a representative of the Russian avant-garde music. The interaction "jazz – avant-garde" in Chamber Symphony by G. N. Popov is considered basing on the thesis on the traditional nature of the Russian avant-garde music that influenced the ways of dealing with "foreign" musical cultures, which involved jazz in the 1920s – 1930s. The conclusion that the composer subordinated "jazz" in Chamber Symphony to the traditional academic methods of working with musical material is made.
