RECEPTION OF ANTIQUITY IN EPOCH OF THE MACEDONIAN RENAISSANCE

Abstract. The article examines the influence of ancient philosophy on the Byzantine culture in the period of the Macedonian dynasty (the second half of the IX - the first half of the XI century). This epoch is characterized by the active attempts of the Byzantine intellectuals to interpret the heritage of ancient pagan philosophy within the framework of predominating Christian doctrine. The author shows the role of Photios, Patriarch of Constantinople, and Arethas, Archbishop of Caesarea, in the development of rationalistic tendencies in philosophical thought in the Byzantine Empire.
