Abstract. Bashkir kyl-kubyz is a string musical instrument with frictional (bow) sound extraction. According to Hornbostel-Sachs structural classification it is a necked-box lute (index 321.322.71) or a board zither without resonator (index 314.11.71). In the 30s of the XX century kyl-kubyz was replaced from national tools by violin that changed sacral functionality into the esthetic. The article presents the organological evaluation of the typical features of kyl-kubyz, both traditional and reconstructed by Bashkir craftsmen. The paper includes repertoire notes.
